Whole-Structure Treatment Decision

Termite tenting on Oahu is a big decision. Start by confirming whether the problem is actually the kind tenting can solve.

Whole-structure fumigation is most commonly discussed when drywood termite activity is widespread or hidden in areas that cannot be treated reliably one by one. It is not the same solution as treating a soil-based subterranean termite problem.

Drywood activity is suspected

The question is not simply whether termites exist, but whether the activity is widespread or hidden.

Inspection tests whether local treatment is enough

A contained accessible problem is a different decision from activity across multiple or inaccessible areas.

Tenting is considered only if the finding supports it

If a whole-structure approach is recommended, the licensed provider explains preparation, timing, safety, and re-entry.

The shortcut: termites do not automatically mean tenting.

When does tenting even enter the conversation?

The important question is not “Do termites mean tenting?” It is “What kind of termites are present, and how far has the activity spread?”

Tenting may be discussed when

  • Drywood termite activity appears in several areas of the structure.
  • Important parts of the infestation may be hidden inside inaccessible wood or framing.
  • Localized treatment would leave too much uncertainty about untreated colonies.
  • The inspection suggests a whole-structure approach deserves consideration.

Tenting is not automatically the answer when

  • The problem is clearly limited to a small, accessible drywood area.
  • The evidence points to subterranean termites coming from the soil.
  • You have not yet had the property inspected and the termite type is still uncertain.
  • You are choosing a treatment based only on a neighbor's experience or a photo online.

Someone mentioned tenting?

Before planning around a whole-structure treatment, confirm the termite type and how widespread the activity is. That inspection is the decision point.

Schedule the Inspection

What homeowners should expect from the decision

You do not need to become a fumigation specialist. You do need a clear explanation of why this treatment is being recommended for your property.

Ask what the inspection found

The provider should be able to explain where activity was found, why localized treatment may or may not be enough, and what uncertainty remains in hidden areas.

Expect planning and temporary vacancy

Structural fumigation requires preparation and people and pets must leave the treated structure during the process. Exact preparation, timing, re-entry, and safety instructions come from the licensed provider handling the job.
